How could your gift make a difference…

Since its formation in 1991, The Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre has been dedicated to ex-racehorse welfare, re-training, re-homing and protection for life. With your help we can continue to provide the opportunity of a new life and purpose for these magnificent, yet vulnerable horses for many years to come.

By leaving a gift in your will, you help us plan for the future – one where ex-racehorses receive the care, re-training and consideration they deserve. It will cost you nothing during your lifetime but each and every legacy left to the TRC, whether it is £100 to £100,000, is greatly appreciated and is a wonderful way in which you can ensure your help continues to improve the lives of many horses in the future.

Over the years, gifts in wills from our supporters have helped the charity to grow into the established Centre of excellence it is today. It was, in fact, through money left to us in legacies that we were able to achieve our dream of purchasing our own property. Whinney Hill, a former dairy farm, was purchased in 2005 and over time and with the benefit of legacies converted into the Centre of excellence it is today. Owning our land and property has given the TRC stability for the future.

Today, these gifts are as vital as ever, allowing us to invest in new facilities like our veterinary treatment barn, training arenas and essential maintenance of the buildings, property and farm as well as helping with annual running costs. Including a gift in your will for the TRC is a wonderful way of giving something back to help our cause.

Making a Will…

When you are living a busy life, making a will may not seem like a priority. However making a will, or adding a codicil to your existing will, is the only way to ensure that those you love will be taken care of and to ensure that your money benefits the people or causes that you really care about.

• Begin by listing everything you could include in your will including property, money and any other assets.
• Then you will need to decide who you wish to benefit from your will, loved ones, family, friends and any charities or causes including the TRC if you wish.
• You will need to appoint executors of your will. It is usual to choose two executors, in case one isn’t available when the time comes. They are usually family members or a professional advisor such as a solicitor.
• You will need to take all these details to a solicitor who will draw up a will for you.
• We strongly advice that you do not attempt a ‘home made will’ as this can potentially be ruled invalid by courts if it fails to meet all legal requirements.
• Keep a copy of your will for future reference and keep the original in a safe place, often a solicitor will store it for you. Make sure a relative or close friend knows where the original will is stored.

Changing your Will…

If you have already made a will and decide that you would like to add a gift to the TRC, a codicil is a good inexpensive way to do so.

Asking a solicitor to add a codicil to your will enables you to leave a legacy to TRC whist still ensuring that other provisions remain unchanged and saves you having your will completely re-written.

If you decide to leave us a gift, however large or small, it will enable us to continue to help ex-racehorses receive appropriate re-training and achieve a new life and purpose.

Already Made a Will?

If you have already made a will, bear in mind that your circumstances can change considerably over the years, so it is always advisable to review your will every few years to ensure it meets your current needs.
