Retraining Spelling at BTRC

If you are looking for options for your Thoroughbred, or if you have been struggling with your horse’s retraining, please take a look at the BTRC’s spelling facilities. We have recently expanded our services to include rehabilitation and retraining as part of the spelling package.

The spelling station at BTRC caters to active, injured, recently retired racehorses, or those facing challenges in retraining. We can accommodate up to 12 horses at a time. The facility provides a break from the normal training routine, offering rest and recovery, as well as opportunities for rehabilitation and retraining.

BTRC is located just outside Lancaster, only 10 minutes from the M6 (exit 34 or 35), on a 180-acre farm set in the beautiful and tranquil Lancashire countryside. Our Centre boasts excellent facilities and a dedicated team, all professionally qualified in racing or equestrian disciplines. This includes our CEO, who previously managed the spelling stables for active racehorses at the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Spelling prices (excluding VAT) include feed and forage, bedding, daily turnout, and access to the horse walker if required:

  • Horses at rest: £125 per week + VAT

  • Horses in light work / three days’ work plus a week: £180 per week + VAT

  • Horses in full work: up to £220 per week + VAT

For horses requiring complex rehabilitation needs then please contact the office for pricing details. Additional veterinary charges apply if a horse becomes ill or injured, as well as for any extra supplements or procedures requested by the trainer or owner.

Transport must be arranged by the trainer or owner. All horses require a negative strangles ELISA test prior to arrival, along with proof of valid vaccinations.

Spelling stables are limited, so if you believe your horse could benefit from this service, please complete the application form here.

If appropriate, we do offer the option for ownership of the horse to be transferred to BTRC once it has successfully completed its rehabilitation and retraining, and a suitable loaner has been found through BTRC’s Loan programme. The horse can then remain under the Charity’s care for life, ensuring a safe and secure future.

All profits from the spelling stables go directly to BTRC’s charitable Vulnerable Horse Programme, supporting retired racehorses who may struggle in their second careers.
